The Start of My Life in NYC

Sitting in the window nook
the sound of fire across the street
fireworks, confetti, color popping into sky
scattered all over the dark gray snow that covers the roads
I can barely hear myself
popping, cracking
rattling, a spectacle of light
my first day in the city
Chinese new year
I can’t believe
what I’ve stepped into
another world
same life
new adventure
walking around town this morning
fireworks start bursting across the road
I saw a police officer smiling and waving at a baby
kids with firecrackers
it all feels meant to be
looking at a skyline again from my window
brick buildings
scarves and beanies
commotion.
That’s my jam. Observing it as I am now
swimming amongst it
fading into and emerging out of
life being lived. Rituals. People. Ancient reverence.
I can’t believe I’m here.
Day one of I don’t know how many.
But it feels good
it feels right
where I’m meant to be
listening to the parade across the street
banging drums and cymbals
watching dancers and a golden dragon
through the red and rusty iron fire escape
from my apartment in New York City.
