12 Nov The Dare to Dream Podcast #48: The Stoicism Starter Pack — Leverage This Ancient Philosophy to Combat Anxiety and the Fear of Being Judged
Stoicism is an ancient philosophy with modern benefits, associated with figures such as one of the last “good” Roman Emperors, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca, a Roman contemporary of Jesus. The beautiful thing about the philosophy is how its practices can help us lead simpler, happier lives, more attuned with the natural flow of life and our inner compass.
Due to the common English definition of “stoic,” you may be envisioning George Washington and his shiny wooden teeth, braving the bitter cold as he crosses the Delaware. While that’s quite an enthralling mental picture, stoicism is actually quite applicable to modern, everyday life. Centered around the virtues of courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom, the stoics engaged in practical and sometimes humorous tactics to fully engage with life.
In this episode we have a little too much fun discussing:
— Our favorite stoic practices, including Memento Mori and Amor Fati
— The key stoic distinction of separating what you can control from what you can’t control
— Why we should practice giving speeches with stones in our mouths
— Why sane people can’t write poetry
— Our favorite quotes and passages from the stoic OG big dogs
Join us for an ancient pow wow that’ll make you rethink how incredible life is. Toga not included.
