Fireflies After Rain

A storm rolls from the skyline
I say a prayer for
The sun, sky, mountains
Heart within your chest
Thunder helps my tears fall
Simplifies desires
Pain is nothing
But a reminder
Of the depths within you

Breathe light into those depths
Open up the windows and gulp the sky
Pain, I’ll take you with me
If I can’t leave you behind
Then I won’t fear having
You along
For the ride

Alone in my room
Sitting by the window
The candle flame sways
Listening to Kevin Morby
He’s saved me in the summertime
You’re hurting too?
And then at times you’re just
Happy to be
Alive
The scent of storm blows
Through the window
A cool breath of air
Flashes of light illuminate the page
The end of a J in the ashtray
My hand can’t move fast enough
Pen moving tears falling
Heart pounding
Mind tries to
Make sense of the storm—

It can’t
The light and the fire and the past
And the present and friends
I think of her though
Time has passed
Is it crazy to miss somebody
Knowing we
Weren’t meant to be?
Moments shared
Live only in two hearts
When we pass
They fade into dust
Become angel’s harp strings
Memories that play my heartstrings
It’s okay to miss them
Don’t repress a thing

The storm rolled through
Straight through me, too
I needed the rain
Now light’s pouring through
How to find
The person I’ll love into
Infinity
By letting Earth’s
Magnetic forces
Have their sway
By not looking
Not seeking
Okay alone with my journal
In the dusk-gray light of the storm
Watching puddles to see
If the rain’s stopped
Days can be tough
But the storm comes in the evening
Cleansing streets and broken hearts

Later in the park
I talk to a stranger about the bouncing
Fireflies
And see a silhouette of a
Squirrel high up in the trees
Shedding incantations toward heaven
I wonder if it’s up there to
Watch the sun setting
