Astral Shades

like a bird
a chopper sails across a
crescent moon
black spires of jersey glimmer across
twilight water
there may be no stars
but this city’s full of ‘em
not the names you know
but the tenacious streetwise
city folk
lurking on the
cobalt water’s edge

like a bird
i find my nooks
i’m a pigeon chillin’ on the fire escape
and the one beyond
the window pane
outside the bathroom window
the transcendent iridescence
of their feathers occluded
by daily convergence
their peckery paths and ours
but birds are like we
made of astral shades
like the stars that are there
but from here we can’t see

like a bird
we exist to dance in the wind
on the ground
we shine when seen by the
empty night
if only we’d open our eyes
