emerging from underground

The scene is magical
And maybe like with anything
It’s not so much what we see
But the lens in which we view

I think about this
Emerging from the subway
Into drizzly
NYC
The skyline
Soaked in a hazy
Deep blue
Steam rises from the road
Buildings become mountaintops —
A silvery steel-capped
Horizon

I stop
After being underground
To appreciate the freedom
Admire the
Commotion
Energy in motion
Lights and sounds
The city’s heart
Beating as my own

Is it a city I see?
The same boulevard that’s stretched
For centuries?
What overwhelms me
Is more than a dreary skyline
But a journey —
Full of people and places and
The steps I’ve taken
To make it here
So much to be thankful for
At dusk
With a duffle bag
On my shoulder
